Kaziranga National Park India

Kaziranga National Park is the largest conservation area in northeastern India. The park consists of four zones: Eastern, Central, West and Far West.

We had a private jeep with a guide and driver for all our safaris into Kaziranga National Park.

The road in Eastern Zone

The eastern zone has the largest number of Indian Elephants. This area has large areas of water and grasslands which the elephants need. You will also find lots of bird life in the area. The largest concentration of birds happens when they migrate from Siberia to winter in India. Most of the bird population had not reached India by early November.

Black Stork

Oriental Darter

Central zone has a combination of mammals and birds. In this area, you can take an early ing elephant ride and get up close to the animals. We saw wild boar, rhinos, hog deer and water buffalo while on the elephant.

Domestic Elephants

Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros

The western zone gives you greater opportunity to see hog deer, swan deer, wild boar, numerous rhinos and domestic elephants. We were very fortunate to see a Tiger cross the road during one of our visits. This is a very rare occurrence because there were only 111 Tigers in the whole park and they are very shy.

Water Buffalo

Hog Deer

Wild Boar

In the far western zone, you to drive towards the main river. We saw hog deer during our visit and a few new birds. If you are very fortunate you might even see the dolphins in the river. During our drive, we came to a stop because the bridge was being replaced.

It was interesting watching the men strip the bamboo that had been soaked for a month to make the woven surface of the bridge. After the bridge surface was woven they wired the edges to the support bamboo.

Mother and Baby

One morning we did the safari on an Elephant through the savanna. Each day there are a limited number of trips into the park on elephants to allow you to see the wildlife close up.  You have to be up early to get into line and arrange for the elephant excursion. Everyone boards the elephants from a platform and then as a group you travel into the park. As the sun is rising you get an interesting perspective of what it would have been like to travel through India on an elephant expedition.

Our Elephant
We patiently wait to get on our ride. The elephants also have several babies that are travelling with us through the tall grass.

During our travels, we split into two groups. You can see how tall the grass is as the elephants are barely visible in the distance.

The sun is finally up as we complete our journey and return for breakfast at Diphlu Lodge and rest before our afternoon safari.
