Taj Mahal - Agara

Entrance Gate to the Taj Mahal

Located in Uttar Pradesh State is the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal.

The mausoleum is located in Agra and took until 1648 to complete. The Emperor died before it was completed. The building is the jewel of Muslin art in India and a UNESCO world heritage site. Thousands of people visit the daily.

The interior of the Taj Mahal contains tow coffins and is not very elaborate inside.  When visiting you pass around a marble fenced in area that contains the coffins. There is no elaborate decoration on the interior.

The exterior of the building has been carved and shows exquisite craftsmanship.
